hob’art cooperative gallery announced today that it has leased permanent gallery space at Monroe Center. Working closely with Monroe Center’s owner, Hershy Weiss, hob’art’s new gallery will be located on the 2nd floor next to the Monroe Center Theater.

Liz Cohen, President of hob’art, founded the organization eleven years ago by approaching a number of Hoboken artists to establish a cooperative association. Ms. Cohen lives and works in Hoboken and has curated many exhibits for the association both in Hudson County and other venues. “Hob’art was founded as a moving art exhibition until a permanent home was established and we are delighted that Monroe Center has worked with us to meet this long awaited goal,” said Ms. Cohen. “With this space we can now reach out to the community to offer discussions, workshops, and forums which is another important aspect of our mission.”

Today, hob’art cooperative gallery has 56 members from Hudson County and other parts of North Jersey. The gallery’s first exhibition will open in February, with the public invited to a grand opening celebration of the only cooperative gallery in Hoboken. “Hob’art is an organization that is truly dedicated to promoting art in Hoboken not only among other artists, but also in the community at large,” said Mr. Weiss. “This perfectly complements the vision of Monroe Center and we couldn’t be more excited to be the home of their permanent gallery.”

France Garrido, the new Director of the gallery, is a Weehawken resident and a professional curator. She is currently co-curator of Visionaries, a show to open in 2012 at a CUNY gallery. She is also on the staff of the Department of Education of the Newark Museum and Urban Arts at the Monroe Art Center. Her artwork is included in the ‘Visionary Art Yearbook 2010-2011 by Otto Rapp and the 2009 ‘Lexikon der Phantastischen Künstler’, a compilation of International Artists.

Formed in 2002, hob’art is a co-operative gallery run by its officers and members. Located in New Jersey, hob’art is the first co-operative gallery in Hoboken. Our objective is to exhibit contemporary art of the highest standard. As a collective gallery, we welcome and encourage a wide range of artwork and media: fiber, printmaking/ digital/ photography, sculpture/3D and painting/drawing/ mixed media.

Watch this space for all the information coming soon!

Artists’ Reception: Thursday, October 6 from 6 to 8pm.

Angles and Demons, an exhibition by members of hob’art cooperative gallery at the Right Angle Frame Shop, pays homage to the venue and the coming season of Demons. The exhibition will remain on display through the Annual Hoboken Studio Art Tour, November 5th and 6th. The shop is located at 320 Washington Street, Hoboken and is open to the public on weekdays, 12 to 8pm; Saturdays, 10 am to 7pm and Sundays, 12 to 5pm. A reception to meet the artists will be held on Thursday, October 6th, 6-8pm.

Erik Attia, curator of the show, deciphered the word demon as originating from the Greek ‘Daemon,’ a term representing the supernatural nature connecting the ancient gods and humans. The creations by artists Matt Connors, Ibou Ndoye, Heather L. Corey, and Gailene St.Amand suggest that some demons are guardians or bearer’s of hope. Mr. Attia, Ann Kinney, Roslyn Rose, Don Sichler, and France Garrido kept the dark side of the occult in mind while creating their artwork. Liz Cohen and Thomas Egan created phantom like figures that may have been seen.

Hoboken Public Library announces the opening of the exhibition, “I Feel Better Already,” created by members of hob’art cooperative gallery and patrons of the Hoboken Shelter at their Monday evening Shelter workshops. Hosted by hob’art gallery and conducted by, Ibou Ndoye, one of the founding members of hob’art, the artists produced beautiful artworks. They used the traditional West African medium of reverse glass painting in workshops during August and September. Mr. Ndoye, who was trained in his native Dakar, Senegal, instructed the artists in this method of painting. The gallery members exhibiting their work with Ibou Ndoye, include Heather Leigh Corey, Liz Cohen, France Garrido, Laura Renee Meyerson and Jodi Zulueta.

The show will be open to the public on the second floor of the library starting Sunday, September 25th and close on October 29th, 2011. There will be a reception on Thursday Oct. 13, 2011 from 6-7pm on the second floor of the library and light refreshments will be served.

Naming the exhibition, “I Feel Better Already,” was inspired by a statement made by a Shelter participant. The artworks will be available for purchase and all proceeds will go to the individual artists. The hob’art cooperative gallery greatly appreciates the Shelter and the Library for their support and assistance with this wonderful project, another Community Outreach project by the members of the gallery.

As visual beings, we have evolved to depend on our eyes to react to our environment. Through our sense of vision, we respond physically, emotionally and spiritually to eyes, or images perceived by our eyes. Due to our reliance on our eyes, the ‘eye’ has become a powerful, ubiquitous concept in our lives. From ancient times, the eye has symbolized envy, protection and knowledge – consider the mind’s eye, the evil eye and the third eye. In mythology, the eye has spurred many supernatural beings such as the eye of Horus, the Cyclops, the Graeae and Argus. The shape of the eye gives us terms such as eyelets, the eye of the storm, the eye of the needle. Spiritually, no other sense organ is as revealing as the eye, and many consider the eye to be the window to the soul. Conceptually and philosophically, what we interpret through our eyes varies from one individual to another.

Exhibition runs from August 22nd ~ September 30th, 2011 at Right Angle Framing, 320 Washington Street, Hoboken, NJ 07030
Join us at the artists Reception: Friday, August 26th, 2011 6 – 8pm
