On October 13, 2012 an exhibition,”Les Poupees = The Dolls” will open at the hob’art Gallery, Gallery E 208 at the Monroe Center for the Arts, 720 Monroe Street, Hoboken, NJ 07030. Willie Baez, Liz Cohen and Ibou Ndoye, three hob’art member artists, will present mixed media art works. The exhibit will be open to the public from October 13 until November 4, 2012 and a reception to meet the artists will be held on Saturday, October 13, 2012 from 6-8 pm. The artists thank The Monroe Center for the Arts and the hob’art Gallery for their support of this exhibition.
Here are some thoughts by the artists about their work for this show: Willie Baez, “I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of creating dolls out of “anything” but I am especially inspired by dolls that have either mysterious meaning or spiritual rituals attached”. Liz Cohen states, “For years I have been fascinated by the roles dolls play in our culture and in all cultures – the dolls I make come from a culture all their own!” Ibou Ndoye’s thoughts on dolls, “Dolls are very present in African culture, they are more than toys for children. They are ritual  objects  that have spiritual , magical  and traditional purposes ,
My contemporary art dolls are deprived of all these values, they are just important social, aesthetic objects.”
